À la Belle Étoile

On the byways to Caraman I met a lad
His mood was too somber, and he would not speak much
We slumbered à la belle étoile by the campfire
I could sense in his sorrow a wishful desire
To free the captive bird from a family clutch
And I offered him my verses to make him glad.
